Barely visible at first as a dark giant needle, Dubai has officially unveiled the world's tallest skyscraper. Ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum pushed the button to start the lavish multimedia show, witnessed by crowds of thousands. A counter tracked the building height as the fireworks exploded and the lights flashed and the music swelled.

Dubai put on the show despite opening the tower in the midst of a deep financial crisis, with the city-state struggling to pay its debts. Officials were in a festive mood, trying to bring the world to focus on Dubai's future potential rather than fixate on past mistakes. And they also chose to rename the gleaming tower the Burj Khalifa, a nod to the Emirates president. It was his oil-rich sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi that came to the rescue of its troubled neighbor when Dubai's financial footing was teetering. The money woes took a back seat to the celebration Monday night, though, as the extravagant program continued, outlining the massive metal and glass structure with an enormous spray of fireworks. The official height was revealed as well -- 828 meters, or 2,717 feet tall for the building billed as a vertical city of luxury apartments, offices and a hotel.
